Implant Restoration Q & A
What is an implant restoration?
An implant restoration is an artificial tooth root that Dr. Wegmann surgically inserts into your jawbone. Implant restorations support natural-looking prosthetics that replace missing teeth and restore your smile.
Made of titanium, each custom implant — known as an abutment — melds naturally to your jawbone. Once placed, your dentist can secure a porcelain crown or bridge, or even a full or partial denture to the implant. Strategically placed implants can even support an entire set of top or bottom teeth.
How does an implant restoration work?
An implant restoration typically takes at least two visits to Chicago Family Dental Center. First, Dr. Wegmann performs oral surgery to place your implant.
He uses a special dental drill to insert the abutment directly into your jawbone. Afterward, he may attach a temporary prosthetic so you leave the office with a new smile after just one visit. Still, your jawbone will need time to heal before the implant can support a permanent restoration.
Your jawbone will fully integrate the implant over the course of a few months during a process called “osseointegration.” Once your jaw has healed, you’ll come back in for a follow-up visit to have your permanent restoration placed.
What are the benefits of an implant restoration?
Unlike dentures or other restorations, implant restorations offer unmatched durability and stability. Anything attached to an implant, whether it’s a crown, bridge, or even a denture, will not slip around or slide inside your mouth. Implant restorations are as close to natural teeth as you can get when replacing missing teeth.
Also, if you’re missing teeth, addressing the problem with an implant restoration can help restore lost facial volume. Since your jawbone becomes accustomed to supporting an entire mouthful of teeth, losing teeth can lead to the melting away of bone. This bone loss can cause unattractive facial drooping. An implant restoration can reverse the effects of bone loss and vastly improve your profile.
How long does an implant restoration last?
As long as you take excellent care of your implant restorations, they can last you a lifetime. However, since your mouth changes naturally as you age, it’s important to maintain your regular visits so that Dr. Wegmann and the team at Chicago Family Dental Center can monitor any wear and tear or make slight adjustments as needed.
