Taking Care of your Denture Implants
Denture implants are a represent a serious investment in your long term oral form and function. With proper care the implanted anchors, hardware and the custom fitted dentures can potentially last for many years to come.
The abutment anchors will require regular brushing to remove food particles, bacteria and plaque. The abutment anchors can in fact develop plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to gum disease. If left unchecked this can cause a loss of bone near the implanted anchors or lead to the anchors becoming misaligned with the dentures. So be sure to brush the anchors with a soft bristled toothbrush and toothpaste.
At the end of the day, be sure to give the dentures and any anchoring hardware a thorough rinse to remove food particles. Then brush away any food particles and plaque with a soft bristled toothbrush and a non-abrasive denture toothpaste.
Attending your regular dental checkups is also very important. It’s not uncommon for clips, anchor plates, bars and other anchoring hardware to suffer some wear and tear over time. Anchor abutments can also become slightly misaligned requiring minor adjustments. Your dentist can often handle these problems quickly before they have time to exacerbate and become something more serious.
